STR Asia never lacked capability. What it lacked was visibil

Logos and a portrait related to STRA in Asia's rental market.

Why STRA Exists

29 May 2026.

Over the past few months, particularly since Bangkok, I have spent a lot of time reflecting on why STRA - Short Term Rentals Asia  exists.

The answer takes me back much further than short-term rentals themselves.

For more than 40 years I have worked across travel, tourism, accommodation, technology and distribution throughout Asia. During that time I have watched destinations evolve, businesses grow, and entire sectors emerge from almost nothing. I have also spent enough time travelling across the region to understand that Asia has always resisted neat definitions. The further you travel, the more obvious that becomes.

Bali is not Phuket. Phuket is not Tokyo. Tokyo is not Goa.

Yet for years I sat in conference rooms, read industry reports and listened to discussions where Asia was often treated as though it were one market. Sometimes it appeared as APAC. Sometimes as a regional average. Sometimes as a chapter near the back of a global report after the main story had already been told elsewhere.

The more operators I met across Asia, the more uncomfortable I became with that approach. Not because the global conversation lacked value, but because it rarely reflected the Asia I was seeing on the ground.

I met founders managing hundreds of properties and others managing thousands. I met operators balancing owner expectations, staffing challenges, guest experience, community relationships, regulation, technology and growth every day. What I saw were hospitality businesses carrying a level of operational complexity that rarely appeared in the wider narrative around short-term rentals.

What struck me most was not what was missing, but what was already there.

The leadership already existed. The experience already existed. The businesses already existed. Across the region there were operators building sophisticated hospitality companies, yet much of that knowledge remained fragmented by geography, language and market boundaries.

Asia never lacked capability.

What it lacked was visibility.

That observation stayed with me for a long time and eventually became STRA.

Not because Asia needed someone to speak for it. Asia is perfectly capable of speaking for itself. What was missing was a place where operators, founders, technology partners, investors and hospitality leaders could come together around a conversation grounded in the realities of operating here.

When Gather · Connect · Grow took place in Bangkok earlier this year, I remember looking around the room and realising that what many people had been searching for already existed. The operators were there. The founders were there. The technology partners were there. More importantly, the conversation was being led by people building businesses across Asia rather than by assumptions imported from elsewhere.

For the first time, it felt as though Asia was not being asked to fit into somebody else's framework. It was simply being allowed to speak from its own experience.

Bangkok did not create Asia's professional short-term rental sector.

It simply made it more visible.

That visibility continues through the STRA Knowledge Hub, through our growing work around operator mapping and market intelligence, and through Gather · Connect · Grow, where operators, partners and industry leaders continue to share knowledge and experiences from across the region.

There is still a great deal of work ahead, and there will always be those who view Asia through familiar lenses developed elsewhere. That is unlikely to change overnight. What has changed, however, is that Asia now has a platform built from within the region itself, and a growing community of operators and leaders willing to contribute to the conversation.

For me, that has always been the point.

Not building a stage.

Not building an event.

Not building another industry organisation.

Simply helping Asia's professional short-term rental sector become more visible to itself and to the wider world.
